Before You Start
Here are a few preliminary steps that will ensure your success:
1) DEFINITIONS: Please take a moment to review the definitions of the terminology used throughout this manual
- Admin Toolbar: A horizontal bar appearing across the top of your window that lists ‘tools’ that are options for administrative activities you can undertake on that window to manage your website. For example, Create, or Edit. * Bookmark: Similar to a ‘link’ that takes the user to a new location, a bookmark jumps the user to another section within a document or webpage. For example, you could have a list of topics at the top of a page/document with a bookmark for each. When a user clicks on one of the topics, it jumps to the section that explains and details the information related to that topic.
- Carriage Return: When using the Content Editor, hold the Shift key down and press Enter to insert an actual single line of space between paragraphs or content. Merely hitting enter/carriage return will not insert a line of space. However, immediately following an indented or bulleted item, a carriage return will help return your left margin to the far left.
- Click: Move the mouse’s cursor to the desired location on the page and press the left mouse button. Directions will specifically state ‘right click’ if the right-hand button is to be pressed.
- Content: The text, images, or graphics you will use to fill each page and section of your website.
- Content Editor: Also known as the Editor. This is the administrative window that allows you to add, delete, and edit the content of your webpage. To access the Editor/Content Editor, go to the page you want to edit, click the ‘Edit’ function on the main toolbar, then select ‘Edit this page’, then click the ‘Edit Content’ button. The Editor/Content Editor will then open up and display its own toolbar.
- Cursor: The ‘arrow’, ‘hand’, or ‘line’ image that you move across your computer screen that indicates where your mouse is on the page.
- Dialog Box: A small window that pops up with instructions or next-step options as you step through specific functions.
- Editor: Also known as the Content Editor.
- Enter: When using the Content Editor, hold the Shift key down and press Enter to insert an actual single line of space between paragraphs or content. Merely hitting enter/carriage return will not insert a line of space, however a carriage return will help return your left margin to the far left immediately following indented or bulleted content.
- Hyperlink: A word, phrase, or image that is connected to a web address hidden behind the word/phrase/or image. The hyperlinked text is often seen underlined and in a blue color. When clicked by the user, it automatically launches a browser (like Internet Explorer, or Netscape) and connects you to a specific website address.
- Link: (see Hyperlink).
- Minimize: The small box with an underline symbol in the upper right corner of any window you are viewing. It is to the left of the red X that closes your window. Left click on the minimize button to pull the window down completely from view. The document will still be open, but it will sit along the menu bar at the bottom of your screen.
- Maximize: The small box between the red X that closes your window and the small box with an underline symbol that minimizes your window. If the window you are viewing had been reduced in size for any reason, or if you cannot see all your menu options along the top and bottom of your screen, you can restore the window to the full size of your computer screen by left-clicking this button. Navigation or Sub-Navigation: Horizontal or vertical menu options listed on your website that enable users to travel through the pages or jump to sections of your website. Often, a navigation option will provide a drop-down menu (sub-navigation) of additional options available.
- Pop up: A small window that pops up with instructions or next-step options as you step through specific functions.
- Product Class: This is a template for an e-commerce solution, enabling you to display similar/related products in the same format. For example, if you were selling several different T-shirts, all would use one product class/template so that S, M, L, XL sizes would be displayed. Whereas coffee mugs would use a different product class/template so that instead of S, M, L, XL sizes, it would show ounces, like 8 oz, 12 oz, 16 oz options.
- Restore Down: This is the alternate function of the Maximize button. This is the small box between the red X and the minimize button in the upper right corner of your window. If the window you are viewing has already been maximized to the full size of your computer screen, clicking this button will slightly reduce the size of your viewable window.
- Select: Use the left button on your mouse to click and highlight a word or area, to ‘select’ it. You often ‘select’ items in order to copy & paste or cut & paste the selected text or image.
- Tab: An option on a tool bar. (Similar to the tab on a file folder.) A tab provides a short description of functions that you can select to do specific tasks on your website.
- Table: A table is a defined area on a web page where you can add text or graphics. Similar to one large cell of a spreadsheet, you can stipulate the size, font, color, and other characteristics of a table. A table is also similar to a “text box” in PowerPoint – you would insert a table when you want to create a new area on a web page where you want to add content.
- Template: An already-built layout or format structure for a website. An outline into which you can place the text and images you want to present on your website.
- Toolbar: A horizontal bar appearing across the top of your window that lists tabs for various ‘tools’ or options for activities you can undertake in that window. For example, Create, or Edit.
