Design at Play: The High Design and Low-Brow Humor of Cartoon Network
Opening February 1-May 19
Directions & Event Information

A couple weeks ago I got an invitation in the mail about coming to the opening of the "Design at Play" Exhibit hosted at the Museum of Design Atlanta Downtown. The opening night was free and who am I to pass up free Cartoon Network art. I love Cartoon Network, and the prospect of meeting the "Voice of Space Ghost" (once the voice of Atlanta) was a prospect I could not pass up. Also seeing as how InnoShare is an Atlanta web site design and web development company, I felt like it was almost a job requirement as an Atlanta Web Design consultant to support my local Atlanta designers.

So, last night I went to check out what all the commotion was all about, and I have to say it was worth it. The only real complaint I have was that there wasn't enough of it. The exhibition was setup in 3 rooms each one had a little something different. The First room was mostly posters we have mostly already seen, but it was interesting to read the descriptions on why they handled different aspects of the design the way they did, so it was not a total loss. The second room was pretty interesting and included promotional materials that Cartoon Network puts out. Mostof the pieces were things you cant get your hands on as just a consumer. There were posters and corporate pieces the company uses such as business cards and letter heads. The final room was the one i really liked the most though, it had the original sketches and storyboards. There were original cells from the animations also. They just didn't have enough of them. Also this room was the darkest and the most crowded, I was surprised they didn't imagine people would be interested in this part as much. I really didn't want to go there to see the consumer end of Cartoon Network I wanted to see the backstage - something I had not seen before. Although the exhibit included original artwork, I really wish they had given more space to it or included more at least.

All-in-all it was a good exhibit, I was only disappointed by the size. I hate to say something bad about a Cartoon Network event, but I am such a fan I wanted to see more, there just wasn't enough. If you can get in cheap (or free) then definitely go, its worth it, but I hope they add more to it soon or the next time around.
